O “Service des Départements“, testemunha viva da perfeição da Manufactura de Sèvres, à altura sob direcção de Alexandre Brongniart (1770-1847), foi concebido entre 1824 e 1832. Foi na sequência da exposição “Produtos da Indústria”, de 1823 e num clima de grande agitação política fruto da intenção de dividir administrativamente a França em regiões (dividida em 86 Departamentos – unidades administrativas – no pós revolução francesa), que Brongniart teve a ideia de produzir o referido serviço, em homenagem às personagens mais marcantes dos Departamentos, tendo como pano de fundo uma paisagem natural ou arquitetónica francesa.
As bordas dos pratos foram decoradas com motivos diferentes, consoante o Departamento a que respeitavam; foram assim decoradas com os motivos que melhor identificavam cada um, tais como fauna, flora, utensílios e personagens.
Merece destaque o facto de o primeiro prato a ser editado, em 21 de Setembro de 1824, correspondente ao Departamento do Sena Inferior e no qual é retratado o castelo de Arques, ter sido o único a exibir as armas do Rei Louis XVIII, executado nesse mesmo mês. Todos os seguintes, passaram a exibir as armas de Carlos X.
Brongniart esperava vendê-lo ao monarca, mas não obteve resposta. Em resultado, foi apresentado à Presidência da Assembleia Nacional, que o considerou demasiado caro e lho devolveu.
Só em 1852 é que o serviço foi adquirido, por um preço inferior ao inicialmente previsto, pelo Ministério dos Negócios Estrangeiros onde permanece, sendo raramente utilizado em jantares oficiais.

The “Service des Départements“, a living witness of the Sèvres factory perfection, under the direction of Alexandre Brongniart (1770-1847), was conceived between 1824 and 1832. It was following the exhibition “Products of Industry” of 1823 and in a climate of political agitation intending to divide France in regions (divided at the time into 86 Départements – administrative units – in the sequence of the revolution) that Brongniart had the idea to produce the service, in honor of the most proeminent characters of the Départements, having as background a natural landscape or a French architectural monument.
The dishes borders are decorated with different motifs, depending on the Département to which they respect; they were decorated with the motifs that best identify the Département, such as fauna, flora, utensils and characters.
It is worth noting that the first dish to be edited on 21st September 1824, corresponding to the Inferior Sena Département where the Arques castle is painted, is the only one to display the arms of King Louis XVIII, executed that same month. All of the following, display those of Charles X.
Brongniart hopped to sell it to the monarch, but he did not get a reply. As a result, the service was presented to the Presidency of the National Assembly, which considered it too expensive and returned it. It was only in 1852 that the service was purchased, at a lower price than originally estimated, by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1852, where it still remains, rarely used at official dinners.
